The retailer now says that information taken in December’s security lapse includes names, phone numbers, and postal and e-mail addresses, and could affect up to one-third of the US population.

How to keep your private information out of the hands of others

Steps you can take to keep your Private information Private!

Let’s be honest: Most of us prefer not to think about who watches what we do on the Internet. What’s the harm, some may think, if someone’s looking at my family pictures on Facebook?
Well, there may be a lot of harm. Do you want everyone in the world to see pictures of your kids? That you’re on a family camping trip and not at home? Do you want advertisers vacuuming up details from your family’s social-media accounts? How about a potential cyberthief cobbling together enough of your personal information to steal your identity?

Google loses another appeal in Street View privacy case

Google’s collection of private Wi-Fi communications might violate federal law!

A U.S. appeals court has once again rejected Google’s argument that it did not break federal wiretap laws when collecting user data from unencrypted wireless networks for its Street View program.
In a ruling this week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held that payload data transmitted over a Wi-Fi network is not “radio communications” as defined under the federal Wiretap Act and as claimed by Google. That means the company cannot claim an exemption for its Wi-Fi data collection under the Wiretap Act.

Do Americans Care About the Privacy of Our Metadata?

Americans are worried about the amount of information available about them online!

he panel of experts charged by President Obama with advising him on intelligence reforms is making waves with its call on Wednesday for an array of significant changes to how the National Security Agency mines data and uses it to conduct surveillance. What’s especially striking about its report, though, is just how strongly one of the panel’s proposed changes echoes the bombshell decision of Judge Richard Leon earlier this week, in which he found the NSA’s collection of “telephony metadata”—the information about whom you call and receive calls from, for how long, and from where—was probably unconstitutional.

My one big 2014 wish for the tech sector: Bring back privacy

Happy New Year.
Let’s make 2014 the year we bring back Privacy!
edward snowden privacy

I firmly believe that 2014 is going to be a marquee year in technology. I’m looking forward to things like the iPhone 6, Apple iWatch, Google Glass going on sale to the general public, the Surface Watch, the maturation of the Xbox One and Playstation 4, the spread of gigabit Internet, the next versions of iOS, OS X, Windows, Android, and Windows Phone…and that’s not even everything.

The thing is, though, even though I am ridiculously excited about all of this, the fact is that there is one thing that I really hope makes it to the forefront of people’s attention this year: privacy. I’m not talking about things like Facebook privacy settings or whether you should set your Twitter account to public or private–I’m talking about our government rampantly spying on its citizens just because, well…they can.
