MyTerms: Defining and Standardizing New Terms for
Machine Readable Personal Privacy
MyTerms™ Information
Customer Commons is delighted to announce the IEEE 2025-7012 Machine Readable Personal Privacy Terms standard. Background on the IEEE 7012 working group, and the standard, may be accessed for free.
The MyTerms Alliance is also a Customer Commons project meant to host companies and the MyTerms Community to come together around use of the standard. We encourage you to get involved and learn more by visiting the MyTerms website (https://myterms.info). On MyTerms.info you’ll find information about the MyTerms Alliance, MyTerms news, and forthcoming MyTerms events.
Join our discussions in the Project VRM group / mail list where we’ve talked about the standard and issues with a deep community.
Join the new MyTerms Alliance conversation by engaging with MyTerms Alliance partners at the MyDataGlobal Slack. As we continue to develop and refine tools and terms, your feedback and participation will shape its effectiveness and user-friendliness.
Past Agreements Available for Historic Purposes
NoStalking Agreement V 0.9 (No Stalking Use Case included in the 2025-7012 Machine Readable Personal Privacy Terms Standard, Annex B)
Background on No Stalking Terms:
Customer Commons in partnership with Kantara Initiative undertook creating initial human and legal readable terms. That work led to the My Terms machine readable standard development for terms at IEEE.
Kantara Joint project No Stalking Human and Legal Readable Terms v 0.9
The wrapper contract for these terms (beta) includes the #NoStalking terms and agreement.
In summary form, No Stalking tells sites, “don’t track me off your site, and don’t let others track me on your site or anywhere else.” For readers wishing to help keep ad-supported sites alive, an individual may select: “Just show me ads not based on tracking me.” The first publisher committed to accepting this term was Linux Journal, which is explained here.
The larger purpose of this term was to bring the marketplace into compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other regulations.
Intent Casting Agreement V 0.9 (Intent Casting Use Case included in the 2025-7012 Machine Readable Personal Privacy Terms Standard, Annex B)
Background on Intent Casting Terms:
Customer Commons work with Kantara Initiative created a second set of initial human and legal readable terms for Intent Casting.
Kantara Joint project Intent Casting Human and Legal Readable Terms v 0.9
In summary form, Intent Casting is about individuals, in a privacy protective manner, putting out a call for goods and services to any vendor willing to agree to their terms.
Upcoming Agreements
In alignment with the now published IEEE 7012 standard, we have introduced 13 more agreements located in Annex A. These cover a wide range of privacy aspects, giving individuals greater flexibility and control over use of their data, in standardized terms and compound agreements, for use in contracts.
